When students learn mathematics, they may inevitably make various mistakes due to the differences of their levels of development on thinking, knowledge structures and life experiences, which is a common view shared by many teachers. Besides, the way teachers deal with students’ mistakes can exert great influence on their learning, and therefore considering the appropriate way to deal with students’ mistakes is of importance.This study clarified the realistic meaning of the topic based on literature review. The main methods are questionnaire and interview, by which researcher investigated high school mathematics teachers of their methods in dealing with students’ mistakes as well as the factors influencing teachers’evaluation on students’ mistakes, and then the researcher proposed some approaches and strategies for improving teachers’ evaluation of students’ mistakes.The questionnaire in the study is developed by the researcher according on existed studies, and the sample was constituted by139teachers from the winter training class in Nanjing Normal University. For interview,3teachers and3students were selected, and the students were all from Nanjing. The conclusions are as follows:(1) When considering students’ mathematics mistakes, experienced teachers are more likely to have a comprehensive understanding, while novice teachers are more likely to attribute the mistakes to students themselves.(2)How teachers evaluate students’ mistakes is influenced by their instructional experiences, knowledge structure and class size, etc.(3) When evaluate students’mistakes, novice teachers are always focused on the final outcome, rather than thinking about the process and the reasonable factors within it.(4) How teachers deal with students’mistakes can exert great influence on their learning, and hence it is necessary to take measures to change the way teachers evaluate the mistakes current days.According to the research conclusions, some suggestions for improving how teachers evaluate students’ mistakes were proposed:(1) Strengthen the exchange and cooperation between teachers, enhance the level of understanding students’ mistakes.(2) Focusing on the interaction with students, understand the characteristics of thinking and its level of students.(3) Teachers should improve their comprehensive quality, and improve the teaching ability.(4) Advocate small-size class teaching, and give students more opportunities to present learning problems, and instantly taking measures in teaching.Some suggestions on classroom instruction and work correction were also included in this paper.
