The loss of only-child family, refers to those one-child particular family structure, their children died because of all sorts of accidents, leaving just parents or a single parent. It is China’s mainland family planning policy that has driven the formation of special family forms. Among the one-child families, the child’s importance is obvious, the loss of child changed a family’s living condition, bring endowment, life care, grief, and a series of physical and mental problems. Under the background that the number of parents who losing their only child has been increasing, Yangpu, one district of Shanghai, taking the lead by means of "government purchases social service project", carried out a program called "the new journey, the soul’s home"---are for losing the one-child family program. This study based on the service contents provided by this project, chose qualitative method such as inspecting project data and literature, interviewing agency managers, street social workers and clients, participatory observation to investigate the project’ achievements and shortcomings, and concluded that different losing one-child families have different demands, so the agency should perfect information to do a needs assessment; The current policy cannot meet the demands of bereaved parents and the government should change the standard of compensation lines; The social workers’ grief counseling skills are far more deficiency and need lots of professional training; Social work institutions are limited by resources and more social forces should be mobilized to care for losing one-child families, etc. These conclusions can not only supply referential experience for other institutions who intend to implement the similar projects, but also provide reference suggestions for solving problems of losing one-child family.
