The implementation of ESD (Education for Sustainable Development) inelementary and secondary schools has an important meaning to the development ofthe modern society. Nowadays, in educational theory studies, highlighting andstrengthening the research work on ESD is an important and urgent issue. TheSweden government put an emphasis on the implementation of ESD since thetwenty-first century. The successful practice of Sweden’s ESD can provide beneficialreferences and enlightenments, which is important to the development of ESD inChina.This thesis is mainly constituted by eight chapters:Chapter one: Introduction. This chapter introduces the following aspects: the reasonsand purpose of this thesis, the significance of the study, the relevant concept, thereview of existing research about ESD and the research methods that used in thisthesis.Chapter two: The development of ESD in Swedish primary and secondary school.This chapter describes the process which includes origin, establishment and boomingof ESD in Swedish primary and secondary school.Chapter three: The theoretical basis of ESD in Swedish primary and secondary schoolsince21century. This chapter introduces the theory of education for all,eco-educational theory and the theory for sustainable development.Chapter four: The basic idea, objectives and principles of ESD in Swedish primaryand secondary school since21century. This chapter explains the basic idea,objectives and principles of ESD in Swedish primary and secondary school.Chapter five: The content of ESD in the21century in Swedish primary andsecondary school. This chapter analyses the contents of ESD in the syllabus of naturalsciences and the social sciences.Chapter six: The approaches of ESD in Swedish primary and secondary school. Thischapter discusses the various implement ways of ESD in Swedish primary andsecondary school. Chapter seven: Case study: Inter-disciplinary project in Harjedalens on sustainabledevelopment. This chapter introduces the background of this project, the objectives ofthis project, the operations of this project and the features of this project.Chapter eight: Summary and implications of ESD in Swedish primary and secondaryschool. Through the above analysis, this chapter summarizes the characteristics ofprimary and secondary ESD in Sweden in the hope of proposing some enlightenmentfor the ESD in China.
