This thesis is aimed to explore approaches to the professional development of elementary and secondary school teachers. It is theoretically and practically proved that the educational research plays a key role in teacher's professional development.This thesis is divided into three parts.The first part is the preface, discussing the background, meaning and approaches to teacher's professional development, focusing on educational research as the most effective approach.The second part is the body of the thesis, which consists of four chapters. In the first chapter, the teacher's professional development is defined; its content and approach are pointed out. The second chapter discusses the definition and properties of educational research in elementary and secondary schools. Its major properties include the independent research subject, the flexible content, and the practice-centered aims.The third chapter explores the relations between the educational research and teacher's professional development, pointing out how the former works as the driving-force for the latter, in terms of the teacher's professionalized knowledge, professionalized skills, and professionalized ideals.The fourth chapter recommends some helpful measures taken to promote teachers professional development from the perspective of educational research, such as widening the learning resources, applying the theory to practice, and satisfying the varied needs of the teacher in elementary and secondary schools..The last part draws a conclusion of this thesis, re-stressing the important role of the educational research in elementary and secondary schools, its key performance in the promotion of the business of teacher's professionalization. Also, pointing out the room for future improvement.
