The21st century is a period when the knowledge economy has been developing quickly. To fit in with the tendency and trend of the world educational reform, China has carried out competence education. Competence education, based on personal development and the actual need of social development, mainly focuses on the development of students’proficiency and personality, hoping to fully enhance students’basic quality. However, in the process of popularizing the competence education, many unexpected problems arise. Owing to the large number of students in a class, insufficient experienced teachers and backward in teaching resources, lots of schools cannot afford to implement the competence education. Thus mountainous exercises and traditional teacher-centered strategies still play a major part in teaching and learning. Needless to say, both teachers and students are always in a mood of high pressure, resulting in the competence education existing in name only. The small-size class teaching mode has appeared and greatly changed such a situation. Compared with the traditional large class, the small-size class not only reduces the number of students, but pays more attention to cultivate students’competence, the formation of self-study habit and the development of students’individual characters, which can be better up to the criterion of competence education. However, the small-size class education mainly happens in some primary schools and junior high schools in both China and many other foreign countries, and the practice and research on it still has a long way to go. Kaiyuan No.1Senior High School is the first one in Yunnan Province that has been fully carrying out the small-size class teaching strategy since2011. A few remarkable achievements have been made in the recent three years. Meanwhile, some problems appear unexpectedly. This essay is to make a research on the effect of carrying out the small-size class education mode, the existing problems as well as what should be improved, so as to accumulate more experience of its theory and practice for more senior high schools in the future.
