Tennis is a multifunctional sport with leisure entertainment, fitness, and also withgreat exercising value. It is being deeply favored by masses of young students both inuniversities and vocational colleges since it was introduced into China in the late1980S, which has a unique place in sports elective courses. At present, tennisresearch papers to study from the aspects of quantity is not many, with a balanced andslightly rising development trend, mainly focuses on the development status, thetennis training basic theory and the mass fitness function and so on, but researches onthe college tennis teaching methods are very little.Today sports has become a culture, a mature sports disciplines, with teachingcontent varying toward psychological training, health education, behavioral normseducation, ability of social adaption and safety education, that can be seen as aspectsof its expansion, also we should notice that the diversifications of teaching contents,the popularity of learning make the single self learning, to a certain extent, can notsatisfy the students’needs of autonomous learning efficiency. At the same time, withthe optimization of the students’ knowledge structure and the improvement of thestudents’ knowledge skills, this put forward higher requirements in teachers on therenewal, update and innovation of sports teaching theory and teaching methods.This paper uses literature data method, questionnaire survey, experiment method,mathematical statistics and other research methods, a thorough careful analysis wasdone on the use of "small groups-cooperation" teaching method in the public sportstennis teaching of institutions of higher learning, comparing the teaching effects ofusing the "small groups-cooperation" teaching method in the basic skills of tennisteaching with the existing teaching effects, proved that there exists a significantdifference between these teaching effects, moreover, the "small groups-cooperation"approach is conducive to the students’ technical level, compared to the currentteaching method, the "small groups-cooperation" approach are more beneficial tothe development of the students’ social skills, sports learning interest and cooperationinquiry ability.
