As one of the most developed cities in China, there have the largest number of migrant people in Shanghai, migrant children as a special group, their education,especially learning habits and learning ability and other issues, is increasingly becoming the majority of researchers and educators those concerns.Pre-school stage is the critical period of language development, narrative ability is an important aspect of pre-school children’s language ability, for children, generally refers to oral narrative competence. The ability can reflect multifaceted information early childhood development, such as emotional, cognitive, social and cultural development.The study of urban children and migrant children understand narrative ability and reading habits by experiment and observation, 80 kindergarten children from two classes in Shanghai Minhang District were tested, of which 40 urban children, 40 migrant children, by allowing children to see pictures narrative, see picture books narrative and free narrative three tasks, to test children’s ability of narrative, and observe the process children read picture books, to understand children’s reading habits. Through the data collected were analyzed and compared, to obtain the following conclusions:1. Urban children’s reading habits better than the migrant children, and children’s reading habits have gender differences, compared to boys, girls have better reading habits;2. Urban children in free narrative, see picture book and look at pictures of narrative narrative ability each dimension score and total score of three tasks with significant difference exists among migrant children;3. The urban children and floating children in free narrative narrative ability to score the highest, lowest score in the picture narrative;4. In terms of narrative ability of eight dimensions, both urban children and migrant children in two dimensions subject apt and story structure has the highest score, and in the level of vocabulary, sentence structure and performance of three dimensions, scores are relatively low;5. Differences in reading behavior habits and narrative ability of migrant and urban children are caused by a variety of factors such as family, school and social impact.In this study, reading habits and narrative ability of urban children and migrant children’s comparative study was designed to investigate the differences of the main factors, in order to provide different preschool language education for urban children and migrant children.
