[Objectives]Firstly, this study is to provide an efficient instrument by the cross-cultural adaption of the Ascent to Competence Scale, which measuring the extent to which clinical contexts are facilitative of undergraduate nursing students’learning and attainment of competence, and to evaluate its validity and reliability. Then the instrument developed in the research is used to study the present status of clinical environment of undergraduate nursing students in Hebei Province and analyze the influence factors. The use of the ACS,is important in evaluating undergraduate nursing students’clinical placement, partnerships between higher education and teaching hospitals and improving the level of undergraduate nursing education in China.[Methods] Step 1,After the five processes of the translation, synthesis, back translation, expert committee review, pretesting,we revised the Ascent to Competence Scale into a Chinese version. Then 380 nursing students were selected for the pre-investigation by convenience sampling, and 60 of them were retested after 14 days.Construct validity was tested by Exploratory Factor Analysis and the scale was evaluated by reliability analysis.Step 2,The Ascent to Competence Scale of Chinese version was used to investigate 260 undergraduate nursing students in Hebei Province. All the data was put into the software SPSS for statistical analysis to re-check the structure of the scale by the confirmatory factor analysis and analyze the present status of clinical environment and the influence factors.[Results]1、The Ascent to Competence Scale of Chinese version380 undergraduate nursing students participated in the survey.Exploratory factor analysis was applied to determine the construct validity. Statistical analysis identified 4 factors (subscales), which are later named Being welcomed, Clinical support,Clinical belongingness, Learning and Competence, principle component analysis indicates that the four-factor reasonable solution explaining 57.536% of the common variance is supported. The alpha coefficient for the entire scale and four factors ranged from0.765 to 0.955 and test-retest reliability coefficient of 0.890 (P<0.01), the results show that the scale exhibits satisfactory reliability measures.Using the Likert scale 5 scores, higher scores indicate that nursing students’ clinical placement environment more conducive to ascent to Competence.2、Results of the Ascent to Competence Scale of Chinese versionThe survey shows that nursing students hold a higher level of their clinical environment. The mean score of scale items is 3.73±1.26±4.64±0.54, the mean score of four factors of the Ascent to Competence Scale of Chinese version is 4.07±0.60-4.55±0.42, the factor of Clinical support has the highest score. The construction of the Ascent to Competence Scale of Chinese version by using structural equation models and factor analysis can accept.[Conclusion]Based on the analysis, the Chinese version of the Ascent to Competence has good validity and reliability. It is easy to perform, and should be a good instrument for measuring whether the clinical environment are facilitative of undergraduate nursing students’ attainment of competence. But the factors of Being welcomed and Clinical belongingness have the lower scores. The survey indicates that Clinical nursing education of undergraduate nursing students exist defects in China, clinical nursing educators should pay more attention on the training of undergraduate nursing students’ Clinical belongingness.
