To meet the needs and the development of society, every country’s geography curriculum innovations attach great importance to training geography subject ability. Geographic chart is an important information carrier which has a core position and key function in geography teaching. Geographic chart ability has become an important training task in geography teaching.So, developing the ability of high school students obtaining information from geographic charts(AHSSOIGC) has many clear advantages, which will be significant to their study and life.This paper has summarized the ability of high school students obtaining information from geographic charts(AHSSOIGC) in literature research method. Firstly, it has focused on how to develop the AHSSOIGC on the light of brain science, cognitive learning theory, constructive learning theory, multiple intelligence theory and so on. Secondly, it has analyzed geographic charts’ concepts, types, features and functionality in high school geography textbooks. Thirdly,it has elaborate concepts and types of AHSSOIGC. The questionnaires are designed for high school geography teachers and high school students who are in liberal arts classes. By designing a similar subject, it is used to investigate the training situation of the AHSSOIGC of teachers and students. The conclusions are: Overall, teachers and students are have insufficient attention on developing the AHSSOIGC, the students are more affected by the teachers teaching;teachers and students are all have given a high rating on effects of developing the AHSSOIGC.Most teachers and students think Lacking of learning methods and strategies of the AHSSOIGC is the most important factor in developing the AHSSOIGC.In summary, it has a strong reality and urgency to develop the AHSSOIGC in geography teaching. The strategies of developing the AHSSOIGC have been proposed. The basic ideas are as follows:(1) Mastering the methods of obtaining information from geographic charts. It includes perceiving geographic charts and analyzing geographic charts. We can perceive geographic charts by being familiar with the geography chart language; by mastering technology to identify the geographic chart; by paying attention to the procedures of perceiving geographic charts; by paying attention to sequences of perceiving geographic charts. We can analyze geographic charts by visual analysis, comparative analysis, quantitative analysis method and process analysis.(2) Strengthening on visual teaching of geography charts.Teachers who emphasis on visual teaching of geography charts should follow the following principles in geography teaching: to select geographic charts around the curriculum standards;to highlight the ability to select geographic charts; to select typical image in multiple geographic charts. It has emphasized applying the geographical charts to learn perceptualknowledge of geography such as place names, geographical landscape, geographic data and geographic distribution; to learn rational knowledge of geography such as geographic features,geographical concepts, geographic patterns and geographic causes.(3) Building mental maps.Building mental maps include coarsening stage, refinement phase stage and fine stage. The coarsening stage is allowed students to form an approximate location and contour map in the minds. It requires students to observe the outline characteristics of the region, boundaries,latitude and longitude position, the position of land and sea, and other neighboring countries; it can be used in the refinement phase stage by crossing latitude and longitude lines and superposing some images; the fine stage includes "cross" positioning method and default method of drawing a map.(4) Strengthening the methods of training to obtain information from the different types of geographic charts. Based on the classification of geographical charts,reading skills have been put forward of maps, geography schematic graphs, geography statistical charts, landscape pictures, geography combination chart, caricature, etc.The AHSSOIGC should be permeated in all aspects of geography teaching because of it is one of the basic skills in geography teaching. The AHSSOIGC will be improved with the efforts of the majority of scholars and classroom teachers.
