High school is higher level education after nine years of compulsory education in our country. It is in the end position of the education system, and plays the role of bridge between compulsory and higher education. High school is not only an important period for students’ personality formation and independent development, but also plays a vital role in the national education system. It is of great significance in the whole national education system. However, the long-term impact of exam-oriented education, high school education exists the homogenization problem and forms a "thousand schools side" of status quo. The lack of innovative talents affects education competitiveness of the whole country. To break the development bottleneck, "the National Long-term Education Reform and Development Plan (2010-2020 years)" proposed new requirements:"to speed up the popularization of high school education, improving the ordinary high school students’ comprehensive quality, promoting the diversified development of ordinary high school". In order to promote the diversification of ordinary high school and further pointed out "promoting the diversification of school-running system, expanding high quality education resources, promoting the diversification of cultivation mode, to meet the development of different potential students."This study takes the homogenization problem of general high school as the breakthrough point, with the life-long education idea and the thoughts of new humanism as the value orientation, to re-position the general high school. It takes the life-long education theory, positioning theory and competitive advantage theory as the theoretical perspective, by using the method of combining with literature research, comparative research and case research. It takes the diversified development of Nanjing general high school as an example, analysis the exploration of four types of high school characteristic construction. This study promotes the regional level general high school diversified development through the school level characteristic construction, to find a scientific path for the diversified development of our general high school and ensure the normal operation of the whole education system.Based on the case study of Nanjing general high school diversified development, this paper attempts to summarize some experience of diversified development of general high school:re-understanding general high school’s training objectives; optimizing general high school education resources; to expand the general high school running autonomy; demonstrating general high school connotation development characteristics; realizing general high school diversification in regional level. I hope to offer some effective reference for our general high school scientific diversified development.
