The ability of English reading is one of the major indexes of measuring the comprehensive skills and qualities of students’English learning, which is however also the essential and hardest part of English teaching. The teaching of English reading in elementary schools encounters some problems thanks to the traditional teaching method. For example, many teachers focus on the grammar teaching and explanation when engage in English reading teaching and neglect the training of the reading skills and strategies of students, which give rise to the low performance of students reading ability.Curriculum standards for English teaching in Compulsory Education (the 2011 version) points out that English reading class in elementary schools should be the first step to train the basic English reading skills of a student and therefore, the ’tutorial learning method’gives birth.In English reading class in elementary schools, teachers have to design the teach methods to facilitate the students to’learn’English reading by themselves for the most part and on the other hand to enable the teachers to provide tutorial advice to the students when learning for the lesser part. Through such way of teaching, students will be able to conduct English reading learning smoothly and gradually cultivate good habit of reading. During the process, both the teachers and the students will benefit from the harmonious of teaching and learning, which will definitely promote the efficiency for students learning.Through’tutorial learning’, a student may participate in the class teaching voluntarily and become a part of the teaching instead of being a reception vessel of knowledge. As an organizer, a explorer and a cooperator in learning, a student will eventually change the methods of learning and the way of learning as well.This study consists of two parts which focus respectively on both the designing and implementing of’tutorial learning’of English reading teaching in elementary schools.In the first part, this essay elaborates on the basic details of the design of’tutorial learning’such as the three-step procedures which include’individual design’,’ collective design’and’pre-setting blank’, and six-part format which includes ’learning goal’,’the guidance of learning method’,’preview’,’learning procedures’, ’examination’and’review’.In the second part, this essay describes the requirements of the implementation of ’tutorial learning’for English reading teaching in elementary schools towards both the students and the teachers. The study of the implementation of’tutorial learning’can be described as a quasi experimental method. Throughout one year field study, we used such methods as questionnaire investigation, interview and academic tests in the study and came up with the effect analysis to conclude the study that those students participate in the’tutorial learning’achieved remarkable academic results.Finally, this essay provides case analysis and academic reflection indicating that using’tutorial learning’wisely in the teaching of English reading can effectively cultivate the ability and habit of English reading and eventually lay concrete foundation for the life-long study for the students.
