The technique of ’leaving blank’ originated from the Chinese painting art. It refers to blank space in Chinese painting where there is no actual painting and very meaningful. Therefore, the blank can be viewed as words that has unique meaning, it can also be used in calligraphy and literature, which can bring the unexpected effect with effectively use of blank. Since the 1980s, educators try to apply the technique of ’leaving blank’ to Chinese classroom in order to overcome the shortcomings of ’cramming’ education. The reference of the technique of ’leaving blank’ in art to education field not only meets the needs of educational reform, but also it has theoretical foundation itself.In this thesis, we try to investigate and explore the ’leaving blank’ teaching art from four aspects:summary of the theory of ’leaving blank’ teaching art, blank in chinese textbooks, implementation strategy of ’leaving blank’ in Chinese reading teaching, attention points in using the technique. Apart from this, specific cases have been analyzed on the basis of theoretical research. Practices have proved that the technique of ’leaving blank’ is valuable and efficient. We explored its theoretical foundation from different aspects:Chinese traditional dialectical thought, educational psychology, reception aesthetics and so on. Moreover, the main objects of chinese reading teaching in chinese textbooks are novel, poetry, prose and drama works. In the process of implementation strategy can be explored from two aspects from content space and white space. During the process of ’leaving blank’ and ’filling blank’, teachers should leave blanks appropriately and fill blanks moderately in order to guarantee the teaching effect.’Leaving blank’, as a kind of teaching art, requires teachers having the outstanding observation ability, flexible response and control ability. Nevertheless, the exploration of the teaching art of ’leaving blank’ still needs further research, I will try my best to put forward useful suggestions for Chinese reading teaching.
