Guidance on history essay writing, for students, is a process of independent learning and inquiry learning. Students find their problems, and then gather historical data. In the problem-solving process, they explore actively and think independently. Thus students through solving their own problems, not only gain knowledge and abilities but also cultivate their feelings and attitudes. Such problem-solving process, what’s more, resembles the engine of the reform in history teaching and college entrance examination. The achievements made in the above reform, in turn, are also manifested in the process. Humanistic teaching theory believes that teacher, a facilitator of student learning, aims to encourage students to think independently and freely express their views through creating the classroom atmosphere based on interaction, participation as well as communication. This paper, based on the above theory and practice, develops as follows.This paper consists of four parts:History essay, in the 1st part, believed as an important way to promote students’development, is in line with the new teaching ideas. In this regard, it deserves further studying. Despite the fact that guidance on history essay writing is attracting the attention of more and more history teachers in high school, there still exists a gap between home and abroad. This paper therefore firstly points out main problems concerning the topic and the basic ideas of the study.The second part is mainly about the significance of history essay writing in high school. Its several definitions, its teaching significance as well its significance in college entrance examination are fully discussed in the chapter. In this way, this part analyses its effects on students’ways of learning, learning ability, as well as its impacts on history teaching philosophy, history teaching evaluation and the promotion of the reform in college entrance examination.The third part deals with main their existing problems. Here are the main three types: historical materials exploration, subject exploration, social investigation. This part finally clarifies the main problems regarding history essay. The writing topics are too big and difficult, and the chosen material is inappropriate. The argument is improper, and the evidence is not sufficient. Apart from this, the reasoning process is not standardized.The fourth part puts forth the main strategies for the main problems of history essay writing in high school, in terms of topics, arguments, evidence, sessions, evaluation methods as well as the cultivation of students’ thinking ability.
