Australian VCE program is a secondary school curriculum which has been introduced to many schools in China for a decade. This thesis introduces the evaluating system of VCE courses, especially VCE Chinese, and features of its various exams, and thus explores its corresponding changes of teaching content and teaching forms; meanwhile, through observing the expected goal set in VCE Chinese examinations for VCE students in terms of their study ability and efficiency and the new study methods brought to students, the thesis also presents the reflections on the relationships between these different factors. The focus of this thesis is demonstrated from two aspects. The first is to explore the advantages of VCE Chinese exam system, including the multi-layers of the test system, the encouragement to the independent cooperative and inquiring way to study, the attention paid to the hot topics in modern society and the heritage of Chinese traditional cultures. However, the thesis doesn’t ignore the disadvantages of the test system. The other aspect is to compare it with the College Entrance Examination, analysing their similarities and differences, thereby identifying the different focuses between them. For instance, the College Entrance Examination emphasises on the humanity while the VCE Chinese stresses on its function as a tool; the former prefers classical works and thoughts in depth while the latter focuses more on width and ability to apply a theory. More importantly, the comparison brings out the consideration on different educational ideas behind them. For example, VCE Chinese test system makes it more people-oriented, stresses on students’ subject position in learning and the practical teaching ideas of the Chinese culture. The purpose of this thesis is to present some ideas to Chinese teaching under Chinese College Entrance Examination system and provides teachers with more ways to enlighten Chinese teaching and research.
