Nowadays with the development of science and technology, Geographic Information Technology plays an important role in the sustainable development of resources and environment as well as national economic construction and social progress. What’s more, Geographic Information Technology is the basis of Digital Earth and Information Globalization. Therefore our society needs lots of talented persons with basic knowledge of Geographic Information Technology. In terms of national strategy, Geographic Information Technology is necessary and urgent in elementary education. Recently Geographic Information Technology with GIS as the core has got rapid development, which leads to great changes in geographic theory and technical means and at the same time significantly strengthen the scientificity of geography. In order to develop talented persons who can satisfy the requirements of our society, it is necessary that GIS should serve as an important subject of geographical teaching means and learning in high schools.In 2003, the National Department of Education Issued mandatory document "Ordinary high school geography curriculum standard (Tests)" in order to guide the activities of geography teaching in high schools. GIS was officially included in the high school curriculum for the first time. However, due to educational evaluation system and teaching resources as well as Teachers’concepts, the development of GIS isn’t so optimistic in high school geography curriculum at present whether it serves as a teaching tool or a subject.In view of the current problems, This paper design a typical and easy teaching case with GIS assisting geography teaching in high schools by combing Google Earth and Arcgis together. The article can be divided into six parts.the main contents are as follow:The first part is introduction. This part contains research background, research status, research significance, research ideas and methods as well as the innovation points of this paper, in order to introduce the main contents and framework.The second part is theory basis of GIS assisting geography teaching in high schools. This part introduces the learning theory of constructivism, visible teaching principles and the theory of motivation and interestThe third part is principles and objectives of teaching design which is linked to GIS assisting geography teaching in high schools. This part summarizes principles and objectives of teaching design. The teaching design is based on four basic principles.Firstly, the teaching design uses high school geography curriculum as the basis.Secondly, the teaching design takes students as the core.Thirdly, the teaching design is easy to learn and use. Finally, the teaching design makes the contents more typical.Meanwhile,the objectives are to strengthen the professional ability of teachers and to improve the ability of students.The fourth part is the design of GIS teaching case.This part contains a series of cases about GIS assisting high school geography teaching, which is based on high school geography curriculum. At the same time the teaching design combines Google Earth and Arcgis together.The fifth part is the analysis of teaching case about GIS assisting high school geography teaching. This part analyses the test results of learning quality to prove the effectiveness of teaching case, which is based on testing GIS assisting high school geography teaching in the same level classes.The sixth part is conclusion. This part summarizes and reflects the contents of this paper.
