The rapid development of information technology(IT)has provided strong support for social progress.Geographic Information System(GIS)has been developed for more than 60 years since the advent of the second half of the 20 th century,and it took the advantages of computer science and geography.Powerful data processing and analysis function of GIS have been widely applied in the production and living.At present,many countries have explored the teaching function of GIS.In China,the theoretical exploration of GIS-assisted basic geography teaching is very mature but there are not many practical explorations in the classroom.GIS can not only serve as the teaching content of middle school geography,but also as a means to assist middle school geography teaching.It has the irreplaceable advantages of other traditional teaching methods,which has made major changes in the basic geography teaching theories and methods.GIS technology is an important breakthrough in the reform and development of basic geography education.Applying GIS to basic geography education is the need of education reform and the requirement for the development of a new era.After consulting a large amount of literature and understanding the results of previous studies,I conducted a simple discussion on the teaching function of GIS.The content is as follows:(1)In the first chapter of the thesis,I analyzed the research status of GIS-assisted geography teaching at home and abroad,and draw the theme and ideas of this study.(2)In the second chapter,I defined the relevant concepts of GIS and the theoretical support of applying GIS to junior middle school geography teaching.(3)In the third chapter,I analyzed several functions of GIS that could usually be used in junior high school geography teaching.These functions including inputting and editing geographic data,outputting conventional map,Processing and analyzing spatial data.Based on these functions,I summarized the advantages of geographic information technology was applied to junior high school geography teaching.Firstly,Geographical information system had various types of functional software.Secondly,its output map had good visualization effect which enriched the teaching means and fully met theneeds of junior middle school geography teaching.(4)In the fourth chapter,I combined the contents of the Geographic Curriculum Standards for Compulsory Education and the contents of junior middle school geography textbooks,Summarized the contents of teaching materials suitable for using GIS software.I designed a detailed GIS-assisted teaching process and several typical teaching cases.At last,according to the case design principle and teaching process,I selected the contents “Reading the topographic map” which included in the fourth chapter of the first grade textbook to conduct teaching practice.(5)In the fifth chapter,Combining with the practical results,I proposed the problems in the GIS-assisted junior high school geography teaching at the emergence stage and corresponded some improvement strategies.In view of the fact that some of the ideas in this study have not yet been tested in actual teaching,the practice of GIS-assisted teaching needed further discussion in the later period.The work of GIS-assisted geography teaching can not be promoted by a thesis or pure theory.It requires more geography educators to participate in exploration.I hopes that GIS can play a greater role in the future geography teaching.
