As the fast development of the information teaching, multimedia and interactive network teaching is becoming a trend in geography teaching in senior high school. Owing to its powerful functions of geography information process and analysis, geography information system has attracted attention of geography educators globally since developed, and is becoming the assistant tool in elementary geography teaching gradually in many countries and areas.This essay summarizes the current global situation of the application of geography information system in teaching. The essay introduces geography information system and basic content of physical geography teaching in high school generally. Then based on their main content and characteristics, the essay researches the application of geography information system in physical geography teaching in high school and summarizes the detailed function in assisting teaching. Finally, the essay explores how GIS can assist physical geography teaching, through designing classroom teaching of “the impact on climate of zone of atmosphere pressure and wind belt”.The essay is consisted of five chapters. The first chapter is introduction, including the topic selection background, significance, domestic and abroad research progresses, research ideas and research methods. The second chapter is the fundamental theories, including the overview of the geographic information system and the teaching of physical geography in senior high school, the constructivism learning theory and the theory of multiple intelligence. The third chapter is about the application of geographic information system in assisting teaching, including introduction of detailed functions of GIS in assisting teaching, with the example of textbook( published by The people publication) context. The fourth chapter offers and analyses the example of “the impact on climate of zone of atmosphere pressure and wind belt”. The fifth chapter summarizes the analysis before, giving research conclusion, disadvantages and future research prospects.
