Novel, as an important genre of literature, has its unique value for Chinese teaching in middle school. Recent years, status of literature has been improved. However, novel teaching does not get attention it deserves. Compared with other literary form, novel has been praised by students for its powerful narrative. According to relevant research, it found that, for different factors, most of students are not satisfied with novel teaching in their Chinese class. Therefore, this thesis attempts to demonstrate on formulating teaching objectives in novel teaching. Generally, teaching objective is thought as an important beginning and end-result which runs through the whole teaching process and naturally has its indispensible role to play.And this thesis plans to discuss novel reading in senior high school, and select teaching material of “PEP edition” as research object. Besides, in the view of present situation and problems in formulating goals and combined with the author’s teaching experience and reflection, this thesis puts forward suggestions in the aspects of setting and formulating objectives. Firstly, formulating objectives of novel teaching should be compatible with three-dimensional object, which can be governed by looking for a breakthrough. Secondly, formulating teaching objective should be centered on three elements of novel and its theme, moreover, consistent with students’ learning level. Thirdly, teaching observation is necessary and seriously considering teaching process and results so as to revise and reflect teaching objective. Finally, teachers are supposed to be good at apply addition and subtraction to perfect teaching objective.Above all, this thesis expects that it can more or less solve some problems of formulating teaching objectives in senior high school novel teaching through this research. It can be thought as a mirror for teachers so that they can receive more reference to facilitate their teaching. Ultimately, teachers attach more attention to students’ reading needs and interests in order to improve their teaching ability and charm, and what counts is making students love Chinese novel reading.
