This thesis is made up of five parts:the introduction, three substantive chapters, conclusion and references.In the introduction, the reasons for choosing this topic are explained, the research is introduced, and the methodology is discussed.In the first chapter, geographic and demographic information on the field-site, Badan Jiran gachaa, is provided. The herding of camels in Badan Jiran gachaa is introduced.The second chapter discusses the history of camel herding in Badan Jiran gachaa from the 1950s to the 1990s, the state of the grassland, and the ways in which understandings of the Bactrian camel have changed.The third chapter discusses about the tradition of’Alasha camel culture’. The changing understanding of the Alasha camel are illustrated through an examination of the Camel naadam.The conclusion argues for the importance of protecting Alasha camel culture, using the example of Badan Jiran gachaa.
