English homework is an important part of middle school English teaching and learning. It is an important factor, affecting the quality of teaching. And it is not only an indispensable link of English teaching and learning, but also a natural extension and complement of English learning.Additionally, it is a test of learning effect and a concrete manifestation of students’ abilities of thinking and solving problems. The role of the homework is so important, however, in present English educational reform, we have not given enough attention to it. Not only do we have very few theory and monographs about English homework, but also in practice, teachers pay little attention to English homework. Meanwhile, we have not stressed on the homework design. As a result, students lose their interest in English learning.Multiple Intelligences theory tells us that humans have at least seven types of intelligences,and each student has his own advantages of intelligence or combinations of different types of intelligence. Through applying Gardner’s theory of Multiple Intelligences, teachers can assign diversified, personalized homework according to students’ Multiple Intelligences and personal characteristics. Via this type of homework, teachers can develop the potential of students’ Multiple Intelligences and promote students’ overall development. In order to make a better teaching effect and develop an interest in learning, this thesis mainly explored and discussed how to design the homework for the middle school students with the help of Multiple Intelligences theory.Based on Multiple Intelligences theory, this thesis analyzed the existing problems of middle school English homework, probing deeply into the results about the designation and implementation of middle school English homework by adopting the methods of qualitative and quantitative research. The findings of this study are as the following three points: Firstly, the current situation of English homework in middle school is not optimistic. It mainly shows a single way in the type, content and presentation of homework. The homework tends to be boring.Besides, the poor quality and large amounts of homework leads to poor effects of teaching. The above problems exist in middle school English homework situation. Secondly, the theory of Multiple Intelligences applied in English homework type, content and presentation style aspects broke the thinking limitation of homework designation, diversified the homework design types and modes of presentation, made content design more comprehensive and met the students’ various needs of homework to the highest degree. Thirdly, thanks to the diversified and personalized middle school English homework based on Multiple Intelligences theory arranged by the author for a whole term, the students’ Linguistic Intelligence, Logical-MathematicalIntelligence, Musical Intelligence, Bodily-Kinesthetic Intelligence, Spatial Intelligence,Interpersonal Intelligence, Intrapersonal Intelligence and Naturalist Intelligence were discovered,trained and developed. Therefore, the students became more interested in study, had a better understanding of knowledge and achieved higher scores so that students were able to enjoy the imaginable success with the teacher’s guidance as well as their own efforts and collaboration with their fellows. Since then, they became calmer and more confident.
