This paper focuses on the modernization of school art education in Japan, especially in period from the late Tokugawa Shogunate to Meiji period. The study of the school art education in Meiji period is for getting a clear understanding about the initiation of modernization of school art education in modern Japan, how it implement, and the structural relationship among various school art education at different levels, thus to grasp the whole process of modernization of various school art education at different levels in Meiji period.The modernization of school art education in Meiji period was a product which was required by that age and also the only choice. The rules and regulations released by Meiji government were the legal guarantees for school art educational activities, as well as the basis of formation of school art education system. The author has introduced the occurrence of school art education in Meiji period and the reform of its system during development history. By review of the establishment of school art education which was exactly suitable for the national situation of Japan, the author intends to reveal the whole picture of the modernization of school art education in Meiji period.
