With the initiation of 2001 curriculum reform in music education, basic music education in China has begun to develop rapidly. Meanwhile, distinguished foreign ideologies of music education have been introduced to the country, theoretically and practically influencing the progress of music education. This paper will be developed in three parts:Firstly, the history of basic music education in China before “practice transition” will be surveyed, including development of basic music education prior the new century, development opportunities brought by western philosophies of music education from the end of the 20 th century and the 21 st century, international situation for music education in China.Secondly, present practices in basic music education will be investigated with three primary and secondary schools in Nanjing as the survey targets to describe situation of music education in those schools, study classroom teaching and ultimately conclude problems in practice of basic music education.Thirdly, status of music education in China will be reviewed. In the context of aesthetics-oriented basic music education, the author attempts to stress the importance of “practice” and proposes that music education should teach students how to “study” and “live” during the music learning, and help them feel and experience music in multi-culture to realize diversified individual development.
