Education research has a long history to stress on the study of students’ learning habits, which, being stable behaviors, are repeated strengthened and developed in the learning process. It does not only affects the student’s current school performance, but also contributes to students’ lifelong learning achievement. In school education, good learning habits help to stimulate students’ study interest and keep a positive motivation, and ultimately improve students’ overall achievement. With economic development and rapid urbanization, most of the junior high school students in the rural-urban fringe area are not getting better study habits, but instead being worse, limiting education quality and students’ future development in the area. Therefore it has a great significance to study junior high school students’ learning habits and provide effective solutions. The study investigated 642 junior high school students from seventh grade to ninth grade in the Third Middle School of Economic Development Zone, which locates in a rural-urban fringe area in Kunming. Employed with questionnaires, case study, and interviews, the study explored students’ learning habits in the school, aiming to identify problems and analyze the causes, and propose relevant strategies and suggestions to the issue. Eventually, this study would help students in rural-urban fringe areas to develop good learning habits, improve their learning initiatives and motivation, stimulate their learning performance, and bridge their gap with urban students. The research leads to several findings: junior high school students in the rural-urban fringe area generally have poor study habits; some students carry good habits, but most of them are not stable; girls usually practice better habits than boys; the first-year students’ have relatively better habits. The study also shows that several factors contribute to students’ learning habits in the rural-urban fringe areas, mainly including students themselves, families, teachers, schools, and society. Finally, based on the in-depth analysis of the reasons, this research proposed strategies and suggestions in five respects in trying to help students in the area develop good learning habits.
