Nowadays every countiy in the world has been carrying out mathematical education reform in which mathematical modeling is an important aspect. Since the America held the Mathematical Contest in modeling a decade ago, Mathematical modeling has received the universal attention and recognition all round the world. Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in modeling has been held for over a decade. In recent several yeas, many high schools have held Mathematics application competence, hoping to cultivate the modeling consciousness in high school students gradually, and more importantly, to promote the education reform, especially mathematical education reform. Surrounding how to hold the Mathematical Contest in modeling more efficiently and how to infiltrate the idea of modeling into school education, this article compares and analyses the Mathematical Contest in modeling home and abroad. Fist, the paper expatiates the social, educational and mathematical backgrounds of the problem. Then it analyses the relationship between mathematical modeling and school education, expounds the status and function of mathematical modeling. Then compares and analyses the Mathematical Contest in modeling between our country and other countries. Because the Undergraduate Mathematical Contests in modeling in deferent countries are alike and people are familiar with it, while Mathematical Contest in modeling in the Netherlands is like Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in modeling in style but its competence objects are upper secondary students whose counterpart is the high school students in our country. So this paper mainly analyses the Mathematical Contest in modeling in the Netherlands and the mathematics application competence held in high schools in our country, including the organization, the situation, and the characteristics of the competencies and the presentation of the students. Finally, it analyses the function to the students and the effect to the society of the Mathematical Contests in modeling.
