Twenty years of opening and reform and the contemporary Western Development Movement have improved the development of Derung抯 and Nuzu抯 society and economy in Gongshan county; meanwhile have had an immense influence upon their unique traditional cultures. The tension between ethnical traditional culture and modernization has been clearly shown in Derung and Nuzu in Gongshan. Because of the historical fragility and inferiority in development of the two, many preeminence and uniqueness of Derung and Nuzu in Gongshan have been lost in the surge of modernization. It is believed that the traditional culture of everj ethnic group has its uniqueness and potential value. The traditional culture is the root of a nation; once lost, the nation would disappear. Based on this perception, the traditional culture of Derung and Nuzu in Gongsban should be preserved intentionally in Western Development movement.As to the relationship between Derung抯 and Nuzu抯 traditional culture in Gongshan and modernization, the perspective of previous studies is focused upon the traditional culture抯 keeping pace with modernization and Western Development Movement and then getting rid of the underdeveloped social and economic conditions. In another word, the economic development is emphasised too much. As to the preservation of their preeminent traditional culture and sustainable development of society and economy have been less studied. That is, neglecting the effect of non-economic elements leads to their underdeveloped economy and3the loss of the uniqueness of their traditional cultures and their cultural ecological system. In fact, traditional culture and modernization, ethnicity and time, development and preservation are not uncompatible, but communicable and co-existant. In order to preserve and save initiatively Derung抯 and Nuzu抯 traditional cultures in Gongshan, education is of significance, but the studies in this field are scare. Through several meticulous investigations in the local places, the author analyses that Western Development Movement brings the chance and chanllenge to their traditional culture. Meanwhile, the author reads a lot of materials home and abroad; and then based on three thoeories, that of unity of tradition and modernity, that of diversity of biology and of culture, and that of unity and diversity of Chinese ethnicity, he puts forward th~ pedagogical strategy of preservation of Derung抯 and Nuzu抯 traditional culture in Gongshan.I . To have the education of preservation of Derung抯 and Nuzu抯 traditional cultures in the formal school system of education, to have the regulations of the preservation and the studies of modernization and school education united, and to have the ethnic cultural experts and the field cultural experts taught together.II.To reform bilingual education in Gongshan, and to investigate step by step and study experimentally upon 揜iwangwen and Hanyupinyinfang抋n.?III.To have multi-dimensional, multi-faceted and integrated identification education, that of identification of ethnicity, of region, of country, and of culture.IV.To develop Derung抯 and Nuzu抯 traditional music, art and RE.
