The quality of teachers is the showing of their thinking and psychological features that are shown in their educational activities which can decide the effect of their education and teaching and can make a direct and notable impact on the students' development. As a common and special group, the English teachers in our senior middle schools are burdened with the task of training people for foreign languages learning. Their quality may have a direct impact on that of the foreign languages learners. With the joint in the WTO our country will have more and more international contacts, and the need to foreign languages learner with high quality will become more and more urgent. Now people are paying close attention to the quality of the English teachers in senior middle schools. Only teachres with high quality can train good students. The present study is based on question survey as well as theoretical analysis. Through the investigation on some English teachers in senior middle schools, it attempts to discuss something on their quality , know about something on present English teaching and make some suggestions on improving the teachers'quality in their continuing education.The thesis inquires into the present situation of the English teachers. It includs the following aspects; 1) the teachers' professional ideal; 2) the teachres' professional quality; 3)the teachers'actions of teaching; 4)the teachres'ability of self ?quesgioning in their teaching. The thesis discusses something about quality of a teacher and an English teacher firstly in theory, and then has a careful analysis qn the results of the questionnair. At last it gives some suggestions and countermeasures on how to improve the quality of English teachers.The study has been done mainly through the way of investigation of questioning, assisted with the ways such as visiting, pargicular inquiry, consulting references and so on. A test has been done to 412 English teachers in 34 senior middle schools selected in the eastern, middle and western regions in Shandong Province. These schools arelocated in some cities, counties and towns. The result is as following: DThe general quality of the English teachers is high and it can fit the need of teaching; 2)There are differences among qualities. For example, the English knowledge of the teachers is rich but the knowledge about education and language is relatively poor; 3)In some aspects ofquality there are some differences among regions, sexes, ages and so on ; 4) The continuing education of the teachers will be strengthen.Such results have been discussed in this thesis, and advice is given on how to improve the quality of teachers based on the present situation and its reasons of the teachers in the last part as follows; strengthen education about the professional ethics of the teachers, speed up the perfection of knowledge structure of the teachers, strengthen the teaching skills of the teachers, pay great attention to improving the teachers' ability of self- questioning in their teaching, and take measures to do well in continuing education to improve the teachers'level of teaching wholely.
