The quality of teachers is their ideological and psychological features shown in their educational activities which determine the effect of their education and teaching and influence their students' moral and physical development. As an ordinary and special group, English teachers at our senior middle schools take on the task of training students to learn English. Their quality may have a direct impact on that of the English learners. With our country's entry into the WTO, there have been more and more international contacts and there has arisen the urgent need for competent people who can use English very well. Now people are paying close attention to the quality of the English teachers at senior middle schools. Only teachers with high quality can train high quality students. To get to know about the quality of the English teachers at senior middle schools of Dezhou City, the author of the thesis conducts the present research by combining the investigation mainly based on the questionnaire and relevant theoretical analysis. With statistic analysis of the data, as basis, the author of the thesis makes some practical proposals and strategies to improve the quality of English teachers at senior middle schools.Guided by some relevant theories of education, the author works out a questionnaire focused on the quality of teachers. It includes the following aspects: l)the teachers' career ideal; 2) the teachers' professional quality; 3) the teachers' emotional quality; 4) the teachers' scitific student-evaluating opinion; 5) the teachers' research and creative quality. The thesis first discusses some basic issues on the quality of teachers with that of English teachers in particular,then it carefully analyze the results of the questionnaire,and at last it puts forward some suggestions about how to improve the quality of English teachers.The study has been done mainly through investigation based on the questionnaire,and assisted by interviews, and case studies. A test has been done to 289 English teachers in 9 senior middle schools selected in Dezhou City. The result is as follows: 1) the general quality of the English eachers is high and it can fit the need of teaching; 2) there are differences among qualities. For example, the English knowledge of the teachers is rich but the knowledge about education and language is relatively poor, emotional quality and research and creative quality are too low; 3) the continuing education of the teachers needs to be strengthened further.Those five issues are then discussed in this thesis, and advice is given on how to improve the quality of teachers in the present situation.The practical strategies and proposals put forward by the author of the paper are listed below then.l) Strengthening education in the career ethics of the teachers;2) Optimizing professional knowledge structure of teachers;3) Promoting teachers emotional quality;4) Developing the teachers' scitific student-evaluating opinion 5) Improving the teachers' quality to research and creative ;...
