Autonomous innovational teaching is a new teaching method and learning style that is pursued in the present curriculum reform. It is based on structuralism and it gives prominence to the autonomy, situation and innovation of the students' study. It has the following characteristics in study:(1) purposeful study;(2) selective study;(3) innovational study;(4) self-control in study;(5) cooperative study. It has the following characteristics in teaching :(1) showing the students corpus position;(2) realizing the students' independent thinking;(3) prompting learning ability;(4) establishing equal study relation of democracy between teachers and students;(5) developing the students' innovational abilities. This experiment began from November, 2001.In this experiment we choose students in Grade three, and curvy the students who attended the experiment class had no differences in academic records, study interests and innovational abilities from those attended the control class, and we used the blind experiment methods to eliminate the emotional influence on the experiment. The design of the experiment tried to be guided by structural learning theory, aim at developing autonomous innovational study, and greatly improve the results of biology teaching by building a classroom teaching system of embodying the diversification of teaching means, the opening characteristic of the teaching space and the autonomy of students' study. The design of the experiment also tried to explore the effective ways and concrete measures of improving the results of biology teaching according to the characteristics of the physiological development of the students, explore the feasibility of the investigation of biology teaching in senior grade three under the pressure of the university entrance examination and the point of entry between the examination-taking education and all-round education. The experiment indicates that autonomous innovational teaching can strengthen the students' interest in study and improve the students' academic records and the teachers' standards of teaching theory and practical skills. Carrying out autonomous innovational teaching in senior high schools not only improves the students academic records, but also has wide and far-reaching significance in changing the teaching ideas, lightening the burden on the students with their schoolwork, establishing democratic, equal, new style relationship between teachers and students, and in lifelong education, as well as in the self-realization of the teachers.
