With the advent of the new century, the content and the form of knowledge have changed greatly. This change has put forward new requirements to our school education. Traditional school of workshop type, which pursues efficiency, is severely criticized. "Learning community" has replaced it. The critics of traditional education consider learning community as catholicon of educational reform. It has attracted much attention of researchers and obtained a lot of achievements in the practice. Therefore, an in-depth study will benefit the education and curriculum reform that is progressing in our basic schools.Learning community theory dates back to Dewey's theory of embryonic society, humanistic educational thought, learning organization theory, and constructivism theory. All the above reflect the clew of the thought from gestation, development to form. On the basis of above theories, we summarize the connotation of learning community as those listed below. Learning community is the community of knowledge, iearners and culture, emphasize constructive learning and exploring, connect school, family and society together as an open resource center, create democratic and fair relationship between teachers and students, and found humanism school culture. When we study it, we can find many researchers put forward their understanding of the characteristics of it. Sergiovanni, Starratt and Raywid are the delegates of them. Comparing the connotation and the characteristics of the learning community with traditional school, we can find that the later attaches importance to manage and control, pursuing the efficiency and the scale effect of education production. It aims at acquiring knowledge, prevails anti-conversational culture and upright, closed organization structure. However, learning community thinks much of democracy and cooperation, boosts up the agglomerate force to accelerate teaming learning. Its goal is to promote the development of the individuality and the learning ability of students. It is full of democratic conversational culture and build into an open, solid structure.Britain and the United States have already started the practice of building learning community under the guidance of the theory. Coombes School in Englandrealizes its transcendental morality through the integration of study and life, democratic engagement and creating amused learning environment. Children Development Project in the United States builds a learning community through changing the content of the curriculum, the methods of teaching and governing and implementing a series of after school activities. Their successful experiences prove that learning community is not a Utopia of education, and also build up our confidence. However, because of the deep-rooted shortcoming of our traditional school culture and exam education, in the process of building learning community in our basic schools, we should construct new school culture that advocates self-determination consciousness, democratic spirit and human caring. We also need change the right relation and the leading mode of the organization, making it a non-hierarchical, humanity cooperate system and forming a harmonious, democratic and fair relation through mutual communication between teachers and students, and so on. The advantages and the maneuverability of the idea kernel of learning community make it become the ideal school of the 21st century, and pour endless vitality to school education.
