The starting point of this paper is to examine, in Lu's moral education thought, the practical significance for purpose of college moral education so as to make the past serve the present, to offer own ideas and perspectives in the aspect of enhancing and improving college moral education, of taking a ulterior step to strengthen and amplify the objectives of college moral education, its principles, its methods and approaches. The ultimate objective of this paper is to inherit and exalt the splendid traditional culture, to cultivate and inspire the national consciousness, and to serve the socialist modernization. This research appears to be especially significant under the circumstances of starting a new phase of development for building a weir-off society in an all-round way and speeding up socialist modernization. Lu Jiuyuan thought has long been a focus of research for scholars, but the study on Lu Jiuyuan moral education thought appears sporadical and unsystematical. Furthermore there is little study on the practical value and significance of Lu Jiuyuan moral education thought. Owing to the influence of various factors, Lu's system of moral education thought as a whole presents apparently a tinge of idealism, whereas its universal significance and its practical value in guiding college moral education are deeply hidden and difficult to be applied to present college moral education. Therefore the creative transfer should be achieved in accordance with certain principles so as to realize its inherent value.This paper is composed of three parts. The first part aims to conduct a systematic analysis of Lu Jiuyuan moral education thought from the following four aspects: moral education objective to foster "man with creativity"; moral education contents based on "benevolence and virtue"; moral education approaches stressing self-improvement of morality; and the philosophical origin of moral education. The paper points out that Lu Jiuyuan moral education thought is mainly manifested in his demonstrating of the following arguments: " an ultimate unity of the Nature and the Soul"; "cultivation", "enlightenment", and "humanness"; "benevolence", "honesty", "juste-milieu", and "self-determination"; " self-discipline", "practice", and "reading for morality cultivation". Lu integrates Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism and formulates his own system of moral education thought.The second part, on one hand, attempts to analyze the characteristicsof Lu's moral education thought. On the other hand, this part puts forward that the evaluation of the practical value of Lu's moral education thought should base on a scientific criterion, and the criterion is to apply dialectical materialism and historical materialism as the guidance, to critically inherit and make the past serve the present, and to realize the creative transfer within the framework of values established from the following layers: the world culture development, the Chinese modernization, and the college moral education.The third part penetrates into the practical value of Lu's moral education thought for purpose of college moral education from three aspects. Firstly, the paper analyzes the practical significance of Lu's thought of "humanness". The author believes that Lu attaches great importance to "humanness", and Lu regards moral education as the primary task of education, the core and basis of all-round education from the starting point of moral education objective of "cultivation", "enlightenment", and "humanness". These thoughts have apparent practical significance in guiding us to establish and realize the objectives of college moral education, and to improve and facilitate college moral education. Secondly the paper illustrates the practical value of Lu's thought of "self-determination". It is not difficult to find, in Lu's moral education theory and his moral education practice, the philosophy of education and its practice rudiments similar to present mainstream education.
