It's one of the necessities for the English curriculum reform to double the vocabulary of each degree. How can we give a sound foundation for the students' vocabulary learning and make it into a life long learning skill? A considerable number of students can't spell or read words. It is an obvious problem in English teaching. The whole process of English study has become the process of memorizing words' spelling, which is dry and dull. The traditional English teaching method doesn't provide an effective way to get to know the English language. The English learner and the English language are far apart, and unfamiliar. Progress is blocked. That is why a number of students can't make rapid progress. The thesis of this paper investigates the impediments to English teaching and to explore the areas of psycho linguistics and social linguistics as they relate to spelling ability. Under such circumstances of elementary English education, the author designed a training pattern to improve students' spelling ability using the theories of metacognition, modulism, connectionism and intelligence. The experiment was done with upper grade primary school students. Their spelling ability was monitored before and during the experiment. Students slow in spelling were given close study. The conclusion can be divided into three parts. First, spelling ability can be fostered. The best ages to learn spelling techniques include the upper primary grade school students and junior students. Second, spelling ability will increase interest in language learning. This interest will promote full development of the students' English study. Third, reinforcement of the students' spelling ability is the best way to help students to overcome their language barrier. A more effective way of learning English can be formed and students will enjoy their own surprising progress.
