We are in an era of information explosion. The knowledge renewal speed change rapidly. Access to knowledge and information is multivariate. For anyone with autonomous learning ability is the basic requirement of advancing with the times. The development of education is no exception. As a new curriculum reform advocated learning, autonomic learning has become an important topic of current educational research. Level of the ability of autonomous learning has enormous influence on the future of students. Therefore, to foster the students’ autonomous learning ability is very necessary. In current rural schools, foreign language teaching is basically force-feeding teaching teachers as the main body. Students listen to what teachers speak. Students can’t give full play to subjective initiative.Based on the current suburban rural elementary school students’ English autonomous learning in the possibility and urgency, I try to do the research on the strategies of improving students’ English autonomous learning ability. In this paper, the definition of autonomous learning is narrow: students study and realize the development of autonomy learning activities in the teachers’ scientific guidance and help, as well as they are disciplinedly, actively l earning. But in the elementary student’s autonomous learning, we must emphasize the teacher’s guidance and supporting role, the autonomous learning entirely depend on students cannot be reached without teacher’s guidance. In this paper, I first study the concept of autonomous learning and related autonomous learning both at home and abroad and the research status quo of foreign language autonomous learning, I also analyze the influence factors of autonomous learning as well as discuss the feasibility and n ecessity of English autonomous learning in rural elementary school in the suburbs. Then, I carry on the question are survey on the English autonomous learning of the Grade Four students of L primary school in Jinshan district of Shanghai. Survey results show that the Grade Four students’ English autonomous learning ability is generally poor, in addition, excellent students in autonomous learning is much better than poor students. According to current situation of students’ English learning, considering the elementary student’s physical and mental characteristic and the feasibility study, I make the following research mainly from the perspective of teachers to cultivate students’ autonomous learning ability, which involves teaching management, the classroom instruction and teaching evaluation. In this study, considering the characteristics of suburban rural students(family, economy, etc),I emphasize the study from the perspective of teachers. After a semester of teaching practice, I do the questionnaire surv ey on the English autonomous learning of the same students again. After collecting data, and compare the data obtained from investigation with the data from the first time, which turns out that this semester in terms of learning English autonomous learning ability training is paid off. But for excellent students and poor student, they cannot be treated as the same in English autonomous learning ability training, we should ask for differentiation according to different learning ability of students. Furtherrnore, when teachers pay attention to the dimensions of autonomous learning, we should consider the characteristics and insufficiency of rural students in suburbs. Finally, I analyze and discuss the achievements and shortcomings of the research.
