Since 2001,China has offered English courses in the third grade in primary schools. The starting age of foreign language learning becomes earlier.Grammar is a very important part of primary school English language knowledge.Based on the investigation and study of English grammar learning difficulties of upper grade primary school students, this paper put forward rationalized suggestions for teachers and students in order to improve the teaching effect of English grammar learning and promote the development of students' English ability. This study attempts to explore the following questions: What are the relevant studies on English grammar teaching in primary schools at home and abroad? What difficulties are encountered by upper grade primary school students in perception, understanding, memorizing and using English grammar? Based on the advanced foreign language curriculum concepts, especially the second language acquisition theory, the author will analyze the difficulties encountered by upper grade primary school students in learning English grammar, and put forward feasible measures to solve the problems in the teaching and learning of grammar. In this study, questionnaire survey, interview methods and data analysis are used.A questionnaire survey is conducted in six primary schools in Siping City.A total of 345 students filled in the questionnaire, with about 30 students selected randomly in each school. And among them,13 students are selected to take part in the interview survey. For the teacher part,a total of 92 English teachers are selected in these 6 primary schools and conduct a questionnaire survey. And among them,6 teachers are selected to take part in the interview survey. The SPSS software is used to get a scientific analysis of the data obtained. The results show that students have difficulties to perceive, understand, memorize and use grammar. The sources of these difficulties are mainly from the following aspects, grammatical status, teaching time, teaching environment and teaching methods. These aspects give us implications for our grammar teaching and grammar learning. From the teachers' part, the following recommendations are mainly proposed: the presentation of contents combined with the discourse for overall perception;the focus on form mainly and decentralized occasionally;the usage explanation concisely and the control use of terminology;the memory of regular rules in priority and the special ones not neglected;contrasts and comparisons should be made between tenses and word orders to cultivate language thinking;the practice of form progressively and from three-dimensional angles;the evaluation and correction of error timely, moderately and incentive-based.From the students' part, the following recommendations are mainly proposed: understanding is the main aim, memorizing the second;the expanded reading combined with context;multidimensional grammar practice through listening, speaking and reading;the use of grammar interactively and the process of feed-back interactively;unafraid of error and preferring repeated practice;combining by induction and refining by reflection.
