Nowadays with the rapid development of knowledge economy and information, mathematics, a basic tool subject in science and technology, its importance is becoming more and more obvious. Needless to say, mathematics is closely associated with human life and survival and the development of the society. However, its nature, characteristics, position and function are still far from being recognized and accepted, and in particular, its function in developing comprehensive qualities is not clearly, entirely and further realized. Though comprehensive quality education is being emphasized in middle school education, yet still there are large varieties of blind points in its idea, teaching methods, strategies and practice, and this results in its inefficient practice for the lack of supporting points in mathematical comprehensive quality teaching. This thesis, based on home and abroad study of the value of mathematics in education and rich experience in its successful practice, taking the characteristics, function and position of mathematics asits supporting points, explains the role mathematics plays in the development of human comprehensive qualities; it provides us with the views that mathematics teaching should follow its law and characteristics; that as the center of teaching students ought to be given much space for broad thinking and individual developing and that mathematics teaching should be carried out in its natural way-vital and lively,. It also primates the idea that mathematics education should follow the steps of modern times and in addition, the training of qualified personnel ought to be set as its long-term aim. The thesis also discusses the necessity of significant reforms and new practice in mathematics teaching in middle schools.
