With the more and more obvious trends of popularization, pluralism and internationalization in the development of higher education development, the competition among the universities will be fiercer and fiercer. While benchmarking, as a tool of obtaining competitive advantage for enterprises, has offered a new type of means for universities to promote their competitiveness.This thesis firstly explained the definition of benchmarking and showed its emergence and development in industry. After that, it expounded the development of the application of benchmarking in higher education abroad and two typical models of benchmarking, namely the USG model and the DETYA model. By using their successful and practical experience as reference, it finally established a model of benchmarking for universities based on the consideration of developmental level of higher education in China and general managerial operations in universities. This model is not only a systematic one with ten factors and twenties benchmarks, but also a practical one. In order to prove its feasibility, this thesis has specially designed the application procedure for this model in order to provide a specific and practical way to use the tool of benchmarking, which will achieve the leap from theoretical research to practical application. It aims to provide a practical and effective means for universities through the exploration of the application of benchmarking, which in order to improve managerial level of universities and help to improve the competitiveness and the quality by fulfilling this model.
