The new round of basic education reform in China stresses the importance of research-oriented study to satisfy the demands on talent of a quickly developing society. During the course of this reform, classroom teaching serves as the main channel of talent training. Being an important component of science education, high school chemistry course plays an irreplaceable role in improving students' scientific knowledge and promoting their overall development. Chemistry teachers, including the author of this thesis, have been focusing on how to apply the research-oriented teaching to their classes.Based on a collection of scientific documents, this thesis analyses and defines the connotations of research-oriented teaching. Using the cognitive theory, the meaningful learning theory, the constructivist theory, the lifelong learning theory, and the theory of subjectivity, the author describes the basic features of research-oriented teaching . According to the outcomes and conclusions of paper questioning, this thesis furthers the principles of research-oriented teaching as follows: research-oriented teaching should be intended for all students, regard students as the learning practitioners, be flexible , educate and entertain as well. This thesis also explains the conditions under which research-oriented teaching can be carried out and suggests some strategies. The author discusses the procedures of research-oriented teaching in high school classrooms: (1) raising questions (2) collecting data (3) forwarding hypotheses (4) reasoning and testing hypotheses (5) rethinking, appraising and applying (6) reaching conclusions.Also contained in this thesis are some early stage conclusions by the author out of one-year teaching practice: (1) research-oriented teaching raise students' interest in chemistry (2) with this method, students may master not only knowledge but also scientific ways to get the knowledge (3) it improves students' cooperative and communicative abilities (4) it is a good way of character training and it helps them face difficulties with great courage .In all, research-oriented teaching makes a good platform for teacher-student and student-student interactions, promotes both teaching and learning, booms students' creative spirits, improves their practical abilities and scientific qualities, research-oriented teaching has proved to be effective in students' overall quality education.
