The principal' s role is changing with the development of the society. The curriculum reform for basic education, as a cause springing up vigorously in the educational field, face many problems that need educators to make many deep and delicate studies. The principal plays a key role in the curriculum reform. With the development of education, the role of the principal moves towards the pluralism day by day. Under the background of the new curriculum reform, defining the principal' s role appropriately and standardizing principal behaviors of running a school are becoming more and more urgent. The purpose of the study is to probe into the principal role acted in practice under the curriculum reform for basic education by the questionnaire investigation to 36 principals working in the elementary schools or middle schools of Tai' an and interviews to the first ten "famed principals in Tai' an" and the other 9 principals working in the elementary or middle schools locating at the city or rural area. Combining many documents, the study defines the principal' s role by classifying, summarizing, refining, standardizing under the background of the curriculum reform for basic education. It gradually, announces the general characters of the principal' s role and makes theoretically generalization and promotion, which contributes to obtain the regular acknowledgement of the principal' s role under the background of the curriculum reform for basic education. The theoretical value of this study is that it explores the new role of principals under the new occasion, and seeks the principal' s appropriate role under the background of the curriculum reform for basic education. The practical value of this study is to offer some references to make change smoothly under the background of the curriculum reform, offering bases to help the principals adjust their roles to meeting the challenges of curriculum reform. In a word, the study has a positive influence on the curriculum reform for basic education.This paper is divided into five major parts as follows:I, Introduction. Including putting forward the question, definition of the study object, the meaning of the research and studying methods and document survey of the principal' s role.II, The survey study and analysis about the role of principal under the background of the curriculum reform for basic education.
