Explore College Counselors' Specialization

In college, the counselors are very important not only to ideological and political education, but also to daily management of contemporary undergraduates. In the pullulation of the contemporary undergraduates, they are mentors. In the course that the higher education is transforming from elite education to popular education, to the counselor in higher education institution, the character of the professionalization have been distinct increasingly. Along with the headway of the situation, the college student affairs need the practitioner to have special and unique knowledge, skill and culture.The first part of the thesis begins with expatiating the conception of professionalization, then the author thinks that the professionalization of counselor is the course that the profession levels of the individual counselor and the total counselor are improved, at the mean time, it is the process that the total counselor strive for their professional status. After looking back the history of the counselor in higher education institution, base on the five standards (the knowledge and ability of profession, the moral of profession, the train and development of profession, the right of profession), the author considers that the professionalization of the counselor in higher education institution is changing from "gestation" to "parturition".The second chapter begings with analysing the correlative datas and quoting the annal of interview, the author opens out the problems in the professionalization of counselor in higher education institution at present. Namely, the counselors' responsibility is ambiguous; their treatment is on the low side; the system of the counselor's appraisement and cultivation is not integrated; the culture of the counselor is ragged , etc.In the third chapter of this thesis, the author analyses the inevitability of professionalization for the counselor in higher education institution, the pullulation of contemporary undergraduates needs it, the change of counselor's role needs it, it is also the necessity of moral education in higher education institution. In the end, the author brings forward five propositions to push the course of the counselor professionalization. Namely, distinguish the counselor's responsibility; fulfil the treatment of the counselor and constitute the scientific system of appraisement; construct the system of cultivation in entering-profession; prompt the counselor's self-examination in practice; establish the organization for the counselor.
