As a characteristic of the new curriculum reform, the comprehensive learning is admitted into the vision of compiling Chinese teaching material, and becomes the important design of experimental textbooks for the new curriculum reform. The Chinese experimental textbook published by Jiangsu Education Press for junior middle school, is one of the representative experimental teaching materials. It has done some beneficial attempts and explorations in the design of comprehensive learning.This article conducts some thorough research about the comprehensive learning design in the teaching material of Jiangsu Education Press from several aspects, including the compilation style, the subject design, the active organization form, the order, the active type, the design characteristics, the design innovation and the insufficiency . In order to understand its use conditions, the researcher has carried on some investigations in several middle schools of Nantong urban districts. The researcher believes that the comprehensive learning design in the teaching material of Jiangsu Education Press is scientific and reasonable in its structure and contents arrangement. It also grasps the characteristics and the requests of comprehensive learning in the design of the subject, the active organization form and the content, and manifests the idea of new curriculum reform. In spite of some shortcomings, it is still an outstanding design of comprehensive learning.However the use of the design is not so ideal. It is payed less attention and its utilization ratio is very low. This situation is the result of restriction of various factors . It's an arduous task for the new curriculum reform to change the present situation. However, the appearance of comprehensive learning has influenced the development of contemporary Chineae teaching material, which indicates the modern reform of Chinese teaching material and represents the development direction of modern Chinese teaching material.
