About Students' Individual Modernity

Individual modernity has been defined as the typical pattern of more or less related motivational, evaluative, attitudinal and temperamental traits that is most frequently observed in people in modern society. Students are the most important force that will construct our country in future days. More importantly, they are at the initial stage of individual socialization. Therefore, it will be greatly helpful for promoting modernization of socialism to make study on individual modernity of students and bring up relevant countermeasures.From the perspective of social psychology, we use "individual T/M scales" which established by Taiwan scholar Kuo-Shu Yang and choose primary and middle school students in Nanjing as examples to make research on actuality of students' individual modernity. The survey shows that individual modernity and traditionality are coexisting in student' personal system and the former is staying at the dominant position. The factors which could affect the development of students' individual modernity are the gender, if they are single child, grade at school, the level of students' school, parents' educational level and social status, if their grandparents possess farming origin, economic situation of their family and habitation.Case study also shows that family, school and society all could exert certain impact on the development of students' individual modernity. Chinese traditional culture also could not be neglected during the course of students' individual modernity development. So in the students' personal systems, traditional and modern cultures are usually mingled together and play role. The early individual socialization of students affect formation of their individual modernity.Therefore, for bringing up students' modernity, we must focus on school education and take great advantage of family, school and social education altogether to help develop students' individual modernity. What's more, we should concern about the developing of students' modernity in the rural area and shorten the gap between students of urban and rural area, and Chinese advanced traditional culture should also be utilized.
