Social Services Functions Of The Stanford University Study

We have stepped into an era of Knowledge-Economy. Knowledge has become one of the crucial factors of social development and country prosperity. As the decisive power of scientific research and engine of social progress, research universities have an important effect on social development; and their extent of service function development will influence scientific and technological progress and social development directly. Stanford University is a world famous research university; its successful experience of social function has a great reference to Chinese research universities.This thesis is divided into seven parts. The first part briefly introduces the research meaning, research methods and defines some key concepts.The second part gives a review to the development of social service of Stanford University, discusses its historical background, establishment and development respectively. The Civil War and the issue of the Morri Act are the whole background. The conception of social service was established at the beginning of Stanford University. J.E.Wallace Sterling assumed the presidency of Stanford University in 1949, and he further developed the function of social service at the university.The third part gives a detailed format of Stanford University's social service. The university does the service in theoretically as well as in practically. In the aspect of theory, Stanford University provide two major kinds of academic research to support its community service, they are Community-Based Research and Public Service Scholars Program. In the aspect of practice, Stanford University serves community organizations and corporations in Silicon Valley according to different service targets. Serving community organizations is carried through special social service community organizations, and serving corporations in Silicon Valley is carried by Stanford University itself. The university makes full use of its advantage in intelligence, research and information and provides excellent service for corporations in this region. The service consists of development with corporations and the university itself.The forth part posts the operation flow of Stanford University's social service according to previous analyze. This flow gives a reflection of dependence relation among Stanford University, community, government and corporations. The fifth part analyzes the positive influence of Stanford University's social service and summarizes some characteristics according to its operational flow.The sixth part analyzes some internal and external reasons why Stanford University serves the society so successfully.The seventh part makes some suggestions to Chinese research universities on the aspects of social service, which are based on the above research in this thesis.
