The private higher education in China is now speeding up its pace with the prosperity of higher education in recent years. A series of relevant laws and policies being put into force, the private higher education faces the new opportunities and challenges at the beginning of the 21st century. How to seize the chances to promote the sustainable development of the private higher education has become the concern of the scholars. One of the issues is about how to improve the management of the private higher education. In view of the long development history, the private higher education in other countries can provide much experience for study and reference, and the private higher education of America is very representative. By discussing some management problems through the comparison of China and the United States, the paper aims at offering some advice and suggestions for the further improvement of the management of the private higher education in China. The paper starts with the comparison of the development histories of the private higher education in both countries and of their respective historic contributions. In the second part, much emphasis is put on the discussion and comparison of the two government's management approaches to the private higher education, which involve the making of laws and regulations, the financial aid and tax management, the administration, and the participation of educational intermediary institutions. Taking the management problems and the American experience into consideration, the paper concludes by putting forward some suggestions, namely to intensify the theoretical study, transform the functions of the government, further construct the legal systems, and establish the multiple channels of financing and the service system of educational intermediaries. By means of these measures, the government will change the traditional way of management, dealing well with the relations between the government and the schools. A new mode can eventually be found to fit the present management conditions of the private higher education in China.
