In 2004,China began a new high school curriculum reform initiative. Everything from the curriculum philosophy and goals to the course structure,content,and evaluation of the high school curriculum reform underwent a dramatic and large scale change and adjustment. Among all the resulting changes,the setup of elective courses in high school curriculum reform is a highlight. Chinese elective coursework includes five series:Poetry and prose,fiction and drama,journalism and biographies,the application of the language,and cultural works study and reading. According to their own interest and strengths the students choose freely so as to promote the development of their individuality.The setup of Chinese elective courses requires a series of corresponding textbooks. The implementation of elective courses depends mostly on these elective textbooks - which are important carriers for teaching and learning. Thus the quality of the elective textbooks directly influences the result of the work. Due to recent changes,the reform of the editorship system now separates the process of textbook compilation and checking. The unitive standards of the basic requirement and the auditing process lead to a large variation in the textbooks themselves,each having their own thoughts and emphasis and influencing the teacher and their syllabus in different ways. This leads to the question which textbook is better for the student,and resolving this problem is an important task for all of our researchers.This study picks up"poetry and prose"from the five series,and choose 2 sets of textbook of"Ancient Chinese Poetry"as study subject,so as to discuss the due characteristics according to the curriculum theories,the textbook theories and the theory of poetry appreciation. It will reach a conclusion after comparing with two versions (versions from People's Education Publishing House and Shandong People Press)- analyzing both of their characteristics and what they lacks. The study concludes with some reasonable considerations and suggestions for how to compile the elective textbooks.
