With the progress and development of science and technology, mathematics has been gradually expanded its applications to all aspects of the social and daily life. The rapid development of mathematical modeling in college has profound impact on the educational reform in (middle and) high schools. How to strengthen the mathematical problem solving and modeling in (middle and) high school is the current research direction of reform and potential breakthrough in the quality-oriented education. Due to long-term impact of the examination-oriented education, our teachers and students are lacking in awareness of the application of mathematics. The teaching of applied mathematics is far behind those western developed countries, which causes disadvantage in mathematical training. It is critical that great emphasis should be laid on mathematical modeling in high school teaching. The outline of the thesis is as the following. The background of the problems on curriculum reform, methods of research home and abroad are briefly reviewed at the beginning. Secondly, the major feature and principle of mathematical modeling are presented through several concrete cases. The relations among mathematical modeling, problem solving, teaching of story problems are described too. Thirdly, the successful teaching experience on modeling at the High School affiliated to Shanghai Foreign Language University is reviewed, whose approach of putting in different stages, variety of teaching are proposed. The application of constructivism theory in high school mathematical modeling is illustrated. Finally, the above all discussions are summarized. The limitation of current project and on-going research are discussed. More concern andparticipation from all persons of insight are expected.
