The importance of vocabulary has been illustrated by many a linguists. The father of 20th century linguistics, Saussure (1916) revealed the nature of language; a sign is the basic unit of language. Every language is a complete system of signs. According to linguist Widdowsen (1993), the more one considers the matter, the more reasonable it seems to suppose that lexis is where we need to start from the syntax needs to be put to the service of words and not the other way round. Krashen (1993) used a sense of humour to clarify the role of vocabulary, when students travel, they don't carry grammar books, and they carry dictionaries.Unlike the appreciation in academic section, however, in recent years, vocabulary has not received proper recognition it deserves in the classroom. Not that it has been characterized by any neglect in terms of quantity. Vocabulary teaching and learning seems to take place in the classroom regardless of the selected activity, any conscious design and innovation on the teacher's part, and in spite of students' autonomy, involvement and cooperative awareness.Especially in high school situation, concerning limited classroom time available, constraints caused by syllabus demands, students' emotional fluctuation, and conflicting interests and so on, we cannot leave vocabulary to take care of itself in a random fashion and assume that students would naturally acquire the lexical items according to their needs. With a view to New General High School English Curriculum Standards, it advocates that teachers are supposed to teach creatively and adopt an integration of different teaching methods, while students should be encouraged to learn actively with a certain degree of autonomy. It also emphases the importance of cooperative relations among teachers and students. In accordance with the proposals of New General High School English Curriculum Standards, the thesis suggests that cooperation could bridge the gap between teachers and learners and promote the integration of teaching and learning. In the first place, teacher-teacher cooperation enables teachers to assimilate a variety of teaching perception and internalize them into their own which aims to ensure a sound development of teacher professionalism. Secondly, teacher-student cooperation provides chances to establish a harmonious relationship between the teacher and students, on which increases the effectiveness of teaching and learning. Third of all, student-student cooperation stretches the learning capacity of students and widens their range of learning resources.Teaching vocabulary is an integration of different teaching strategies including how to involve learners, how to put words to work, how to highlight the word form in presenting vocabulary and so on which can not be successful without the cooperation of learners. Learning vocabulary, on the other hand, can be more effective when learners actively involve themselves in teaching practice and use a combination of learning strategies such as vocabulary memorization techniques, using dictionaries etc. to continue learning after class. To sum up, the integration of vocabulary teaching and learning strategies would optimize the effect of teaching and learning in and outside classroom, which could be achieved by means of various cooperation.
