Special education of music, as an important component of special education, plays a vital role in special children's education, such as physical and psychological recuperation, cultivation of arts and development in potentiality. Thus, it has received more and more reception and attention. However, compared with the developed countries, special education of music in our country started late with a weak economic foundation and is still less developed. So, a survey is made on the status quo of special music education in the city of Xi'an to explore the new methods suitable for the rapid development of music education for special children in our country and in what way special music education can give full play of its recuperative role and compensatory role in education of special children, intending to find the inadequacy and its causes existing and attempting to put forward some solutions to improvements of this situation for the good intention of the enhancement of theory and practice of music education for special children. By applying methods of questionnaires, interviews and actions research, the role of teachers, students, schools and parents is explored and a lot of statistics and information are collected. Based on the author's personal practice and the detailed study of the related literature review, from the viewpoint of putting theory into practice, and after a comprehensive analysis of the status quo of special music education in the city of Xi'an, we come to the following conclusions.Firstly, the related authorities haven't attached enough importance to special education, which leads to a disconnection in steps of implementation, as a consequence, to a bigger hindrance to the rapid development of special education.Secondly, a serious lack of teachers and the professional incompetence of teachers at present result in great blindness, randomness in music teaching, and also unspecific teaching contents and forms of teaching organization without purposes.Thirdly, most parents are not fully aware of the significance of music education in special children's physical and psychological recovery, cultivation of interests and development in potentiality, which accounts for their being not active in encouraging children's learning music and thus being not helpful to the formation of a harmonious family environment of music.Based on the analyses above, the author gives a good thought and exploration of special education of music in Xi'an. First of all, the related educational authorities should update their old educational conceptions, and make up for deficiencies in special music education. Next, the professional qualities of teachers should be reinforced and their academic skills and research awareness needs to be strengthened. Lastly, it is necessary to enhance the complementary role of Music Therapy, Psychology, medicine, fine arts in special music education. Meanwhile, the fifth chapter demonstrated the results of action research through the case study and a prospect of the future of special music education is made at the very end of the thesis.
