The professional development of teachers is the practical requirement of the development of times. It is crucial to the success of the new curriculum reforms. The autonomous professional development of teachers is at the very core of it.Based on the analysis of literature, the first five parts of the article define the concepts of the professional development of teachers and the autonomous professional development of teachers, and analyze the professional quality structure of middle school chemistry teachers and useful approaches to the professional development of teachers, thus putting forward the theoretical bases of this research. According to the research, the autonomous professional development of middle school chemistry teachers is a process that chemistry teachers achieve the renewal, enrichment, perfection and development of their own professional quality structures.The writer has looked into the present situation of Linyi middle school chemistry teachers'autonomous professional development. In the sixth part, the article analyses the research results form the following aspects : the general condition of chemistry teachers, their professional quality and approaches to their autonomous professional development. By doing so, the writer has a deep understanding of middle school chemistry teachers'autonomous professional development.The seventh part of the article puts forward the proposal to promote chemistry teachers'autonomous professional development from a practical level, according to the present condition of middle school chemistry teachers'autonomous professional development. The writer believes that in order to achieve autonomous professional development middle school chemistry teachers must do as follows: firstly, build and strengthen the awareness of autonomous development to keep up the development; secondly, formulate plans for autonomous professional development to maintain a clear direction ; above all, push forward and realize their own professional development through the interactivity of teaching, learning, reviewing and researching in their daily teaching life.
