Gender wage gaps and the function of education in improving personal salary become a hot topic. Finding out the eason for gender wage gaps and formulating effective measures can help to improve the development of women’s career, as well can help to build a harmonious labor relations. Only find out the reason for gender wage gaps, differences in human capital between male and female or discrimination in labor market, can we put out the correcte and effective policy to eliminate the unequal.Inspecting academic research method and idea, this paper analysis the Chinese urban residents’ gender differences in return to education and the reason for gender wage gaps based on thesurvey data of CHNS2011. The results of Mincer equation shows that eduction is benefit for improving personal salary, especially for female. The male’s return to education is significantly higher than male’s. The results of quantile regression also show that the regression coefficients of years of education for female are higher than that for male in each quantile, which indicates that education has different works on improving male’s and female’s salary. The results of Oaxaca-Blinder decomposition indicate that discrimination is an important factor in formating gender wage gaps. The male’s average wage is significantly higher than female’s, but this gaps gradually decreases with the rising of education level, meanwhile, the wage discrimination female faced with is getting smaller. The results of Melly(2006) decomposition show that Chinese urban residents’ s gender wage gap is large in low and middle quantile. The difference of coefficients is greater than total difference in 0.6 quantile or below, which indicates that for the low-income population, female’s production efficiency is superior to male and gender wage gaps is mainly caused by the difference of coefficients. Viewing the structure of gender wage gaps, the proportion of gender wage gaps caused by discrimination decreases gradually with the increase of income, but the proportion is still very large. The findings of this paper revealed the current wage discrimination which female faced with in Chinese labor marke, providing a strong data support for designing and implementing the labor system and salary system, and creating a fair labor environment.
