Nowadays, our country is in a transitional period of socio-economic structure, and the people are charged with important tasks of making our country industrialized, modernized and urbanized.Guided by the policy of reform and opening-up, we have been speeding up the pace of our modernizations. However, the level of our urbanization greatly lags behind because of the history and wrong awareness about it. The backwardness couldn't meet the demand of industrialization, modernization and marketing. Meanwhile, it causes a series of social problems such as urban-rural disparity, shortage of effective demands and low employment etc. The low urbanization level has become an obstruction to Chinese economic development and a well-off society in a all-round way. Therefore, promoting the rapid development of urbanization is extremely urgent to us. Recently, the governments and experts in the world have been showing great concern over the problem and made substantial achievement, but all the studies need improving and deepening, especially the route choices of urbanization . The different opinions and gaps on this development strategies lack ideological guideline. On the basis of the above, we necessarily carry out further study on the theory and practice to the route of urbanization, taking in and learning from advanced experiences in other countries. Combining all these with Chinese characteristic, we put forward our own practical strategies, which promotes the economic development completely and harmoniously.The paper firstly makes a brief introduction to the fundamental theory of urbanization. Secondly it explores the world's practical experiences of urbanization and reviews its regular patterns. The inspirations from which we drew are the following: Both urbanization and economic development should coincide; Market economy is the effective way of developing urbanization under the governmental macro-control; Centralized urbanization must be combined with scattered one; The purpose of urbanization is to make economy ,society and ecology developed harmoniously. The paper then compares Chinese urbanization to foreign's by the method of comparative study, indicating the current situation and difficulties, such as low level urbanization, regional differences, city's limited resources, and severe employment. The paper analyses different routes of urbanization through the system of urbanization, the layout of city and the scale structure of city. Finally, the paper makes out the route choices of Chinese urbanization and the development strategies. China should follow her own road and make the cities pluralistic, computerized, modernized, and continuously developed as well as make the rural areas urbanized. To promote the development strategies, we are supposed to make overall plans and all-round consideration by the means of network, industrialization and creative rules.The innovation of the paper includes two aspects: On the route choices of urbanization, the study lays stress on not only the quantities of cities, but also the quality of urbanization. And different sorts of cities should be developed harmoniously both in economy and ecology.
