Research Of Tibetan Buddhist Architectural Decoration In Aba County

Aba County, standing by the Aqu River in the Western Sichuan Plateau, is a Tibetan's gathering place featured by its theocratic system, distinctive ethnical culture and unique regional characteristics. Tibetan architecture functions as an embodiment of Tibetan Buddhism, and Tibetan Buddhist architectural decoration provides an expression of the religious culture on a deeper level.In order to develop a comprehensive, systematic and in-depth understanding of the cultural implication of Tibetan architecture and to apply such understanding to the work of modern architecture, it is of significance to understand the history of Tibetan Buddhist architecture, to explore the historical environmental and geographic conditions forming the basic characteristics of the architectural decorations, and to analyze the basic composition, symbols and artistic features of the architectural decorations and colors. Such research will help to achieve a better coordination of the relationship between tradition and modernity and to make a better preservation of localized and ethnical culture of architectural decoration.The philosophy of Tibetan Buddhist architectural decorations is mainly reflected in:1. the theoretical system and practical application of architectural decoration against the religious cultural background; 2. the everlasting goal of selecting the essence and discarding the dross; 3. a vivid expression of a blend of culture and architecture through the architectural decorations; and 4. respect for nature and harmony between the human being and the nature inspired by the region. In the spirit of the above thoughts and based on the implications for the architectural decoration, this paper intends to discuss the following topics through on-site visits, literature review and pictures collections.Firstly, to analyze the development history and regional features of Tibetan Buddhist architecture in Aba County on the basis of research on the formation and development of Tibetan Buddhist architecture in Aba country, Sichuan.Secondly, knowledge of the relationship between architectural function and its form is essential for understanding and interpreting such architecture, and the decorative methods are always indispensable regardless of whether the architectural function or the architectural form plays a dominant role. As such, this paper summarizes the artistic characteristics of the Tibetan Buddhist architectural decorations in Aba County through an analysis of their decorative materials, subject matters, methods and colors.Finally, this paper summarizes the influences on modern Tibetan architectures from the traditional Tibetan Buddhist architectural decorations through the research on artistic expression and cultural implication of Tibetan Buddhist architecture in Aba County. In addition, this paper intends to provide creative inspiration and technique of expression to architectural professionals through the reference to and application methods of traditional culture of Tibetan architectures.
